Students are first taught the phonetic sounds of the alphabet.  The students are then taught to blend these sounds together to build and read simple phonetic words.  Student begin to write as soon as they are able to hold a pencil correctly.  The Handwriting Without Tears program is used to teach handwriting.  This method is implemented through the 5th grade.
